FAQ’s

What is an Estate Sale?

An Estate Sale, also called a Tag Sale, is a way of liquidating the belongings of a family or estate. They are used when someone is in need of a way to sell items due to downsizing, moving, divorce, bankruptcy, or death. The public is invited into the home and given the opportunity to purchase any item that is priced for sale. At times there are items that are not for sale because the family has decided to keep them or new owners of the house have made them part of a contract to buy the house. Estate Auctions are where everything is auctioned instead of being marked with a selling price.

What does an Estate Sale Company do?

The estate sale company, in whatever its form, will work to sell as many of your items as they can, for the best price possible. Traditional estate sales usually last 1-3 days, and prices are determined by the company, and are often discounted as the sale progresses. How much an item will sell for at any sale depends on many factors, like condition, scarcity, and location.

Regardless of the type of company, what happens when you hire one is pretty much the same. They’ll stage the sale, either by taking the items offsite and displaying them in their showroom, or by setting up tables in your home. Depending on the condition of the home and how much there is to sell, this can be a time-consuming job. The items must be unearthed, evaluated, and priced. The company will advertise the sale (posting on EstateSales.NET, ) and put up the necessary signage. They will oversee the sale, and clean up afterwards. Many will even arrange to donate any unsold items, and have it hauled away, if that’s what you want.

You choose the company; they’ll do the rest.

No need to clean or dispose of anything however we will need to be able to see exactly what will be in the sale. We will ask you to walk us through the house and show us what is for sale.

I have scheduled a sale should I throw away the stuff that won't sell?

Items that are broken, chipped, stained, etc. won't be sold but you will be surprised at the things that will sell. Please do not donate or dispose of anything except trash.

Plan on our team working in your home the week before the sale. We usually begin work on Monday morning to prepare for a Fri/Sat sale.

How do you price the items?

Many common items we know from experience how to price, other items require research. We use a combination of information from auction sites and eBay to try and find comparable items. We also have local professionals should we need expert advice about items such as rugs or Grandfather Clocks.

Do you negotiate on the items?

All items are clearly priced and on the first day of the sale, we do not negotiate. Our goal is to get as much as possible for you however this is a liquidation sale and we need the items to sell. On the second day of the sale, everything that is still there is 50% off.

What type of items sells best at estate sales?

Everyday items in good condition. You do not need a house full of antiques or silver to have a successful sale. We specialize in entire household sales, people shop for a wide variety of items.

Will I be able to stay home during my sale?

No, we always ask that the owners not be present during the sale. For some people, it can be emotional to see people shopping in their home, and also it can be confusing for shoppers if they think they could possibly negotiate directly with the owners.

How long before I will get paid and how will I know what was sold?

You will receive an itemized list of the items that were sold along with a check for your portion of the sales within 5-7 business days of the sale.

What happens to the items that don't sell?

We can schedule a clean-out for you. In most cases, there is no charge for picking up the remaining items. Items are then donated or sold to offset the cost of cleaning out the house.
